about Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga has a strong focus on alignment and precision. The postures are held for longer than in other styles of yoga, which gives tight muscles time to lengthen and relax and allows students to work safely within their own limitations.

Props such as blocks and chairs are used so the poses can be achieved by all types of people with all types of bodies. Yoga is made accessible to all. The support of props allows attention to move from the outer body and bring greater interoception – awareness of the inner organic body.

Classes include standing poses, forward extensions, backbends, twists and build to include inversions and arm balances. These varied movements develop the body in different ways; strengthening, energising, calming and grounding.  Posture improves to facilitate deeper breathing. Conscious breathing brings the body into the parasympathetic nervous system and provides calm and relaxation.

A harmonious mind and body experience.
